How will Berlin continue to grow? This study analyses the actual housing sprawl of the Berlin-Brandenburg region by focusing on the waterfront. Due to an uncontrolled building development, the historical roots of the waterfront progressively get lost, even though this fluent territory geographically claims the common identity of Berlin and Brandenburg, representing therefore an enormous potential for the future of the metropolis. The following proposition is based on the 1977 published manifesto The City in the City – Berlin: A Green Archipelago by Rem Koolhaas and Oswald Mathias Ungers. It presents an urban development where the numerous industries and former public buildings, that remain nowadays abandoned on the waterfront, would be converted into urban islands and surrounded by a protected and renatured water landscape.
